Immunization Costing Action Network

The Immunization Costing Action Network (ICAN) worked to increase the visibility, availability, understanding, and use of immunization delivery cost information. The ICAN built country capacity around the generation of cost information that addresses challenges at the top of domestic health and immunization financing agendas to ensure program and policy relevance. The ICAN also worked with countries to improve interpretation and translation of cost information so that it is used in country decision-making processes, in addition to informing routine planning and budgeting. Equipped with relevant and user-friendly cost information, the ICAN believes that immunization managers and policymakers will be empowered in fundraising and advocacy efforts and will make better resource allocation decisions, improving the efficiency and equity of immunization programs.

The ICAN was comprised of four member countries―India, Indonesia, Tanzania, and Vietnam―with country teams that included health economist researchers and immunization managers and planners from ministries of health. ThinkWell and John Snow, Inc. (JSI) facilitated the ICAN to encourage knowledge sharing and co-production of effective strategies for generation and policy translation of cost evidence.

The ICAN also had global research as a priority. ThinkWell conducted a systematic review of the delivery costs of immunization programs with the aim of developing a unit cost repository and cost benchmarks to make immunization delivery cost data more accessible and easy to interpret.

The ICAN was supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
