Sarker et al. (2022) published a study in Vaccine:X on oral cholera vaccine delivery through a mass campaign in Bangladesh. The campaign exclusively focused on children. Altogether, 66,311 children between the ages of 1-14 years were fully vaccinated with two-doses of OCV, whereas 9,035 received one dose. The vaccination program amounted to US$405,445 in total with vaccine price representing 66% of this total cost, vaccine delivery-related activities accounting for 32% and 2% were costs incurred by the vaccine recipients.
The societal cost per patient for full vaccination was estimated at US$6.11. US$6.01 constituted the total provider cost for full vaccination and US$0.10 was the recipient cost. The authors found the OCV campaign solely targeting children to yield a relatively higher total society cost when compared to campaigns for all ages in other studies.
