Associations between antibiotic use and COVID-19 cases and vaccination in 71 countries 2020-22

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious global health concern; however, little has been known about the full impact of the pandemic on antibiotics use worldwide. Nandi and co-authors estimate the association between antibiotic sales volumes and COVID-19 cases and vaccinations per 1000 people in 71 countries from March 2022 until May 2022. They found that monthly sales of cephalosporins, penicillins, and macrolides were positively associated with COVID-19 cases globally but no associations were evident between COVID-19 vaccinations and antibiotic sales. Findings stress the need for antibiotic resistance stewardship in the COVID-19 landscape.
