Vaccines for a sustainable planet

Home > Vaccines for a sustainable planet

Vaccines are critical to human life and there are a multitude of examples of their impact in preventing, controlling, and eradicating disease. In their new publication, Pecetta et al discuss vaccines as a “green tool” for promoting health for the planet, in addition to human health. The authors argue that vaccines prevent climate change–related diseases, decrease antibiotic use, and bring significant economic benefits such as averting medical expenditure. They conclude by noting that if the health of the planet continues to worsen, preserving the health of the population cannot be achieved, and make recommendations for how to incorporate vaccines into the revised sustainable development goals (SDGs).
