Nelson Rafael Alvis Guzmán of the Universidad de Cartagena and Fernando De la Hoz Restrepo of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia released a book in 2023 on the economic evaluation of vaccines in Colombia between 1999 and 2018.
The book introduces the reader to the econometric and epidemiological methods used in Colombia to update the schedule of the Expanded Program on Immunizations (EPI) between 1999 and 2018. During that period, the State’s vaccine schedule evolved to become one of the most comprehensive in the world. This progress was possible thanks to the political commitment of various governments, the leadership of the Pan American Health Organization, and the efforts of officials in charge of the EPI during that period. Similarly, this progress would not have been possible without the technical support provided by the National University of Colombia and the University of Cartagena through numerous econometric and epidemiological analyses that supported decision-making by the National Committee on Immunization Practices and the Ministry of Health. This book presents a summary of the work carried out and places it in the national and international context. The individual tasks were performed by a multidisciplinary team that combined scientific expertise in health economics and epidemiology with research experience and youthfulness. The tasks guided decision-making and also contributed to the generation of knowledge in the area of costs for various vaccine-preventable diseases. They thus contributed to the implementation of evidence and the evaluation of health interventions in Colombia and Latin America.
Nelson Rafael Alvis Guzmán de la Universidad de Cartagena y Fernando De la Hoz Restrepo de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia han lanzado un libro sobre la evaluación económica de vacunas en Colombia entre 1999 y 2018.
El libro introduce al lector en los métodos econométricos y epidemiológicos usados en Colombia para actualizar el esquema del Programa Amplido de Inmunizaciones (PAI) entre 1999 y 2018. Durante ese lapso, el esquema de vacunas del Estado evolucionó hasta convertirse en uno de los más completos del mundo. Este avance fue posible gracias al compromiso político de los diferentes gobiernos, al liderazgo de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud y al de los funcionarios que estuvieron a cargo del PAI durante ese periodo. Igualmente, este avance no habría sido posible sin el apoyo técnico brindado por la Universidad Nacional de Colombia y la Universidad de Cartagena a través de numerosos análisis econométricos y epidemiológicos que soportaron la toma de decisiones del Comité Nacional de Prácticas de Inmunización y del Ministerio de Salud. Este libro muestra un resumen de los trabajos realizados y los enmarca en el contexto nacional e internacional. Los trabajos individuales fueron realizados por un equipo multidisciplinario que combinó la experiencia científica en economía de la salud y epidemiología con la experiencia investigativa y la juventud. Los trabajos orientaron la toma de decisiones y también la generación de conocimiento en el área de costos de diversas enfermedades inmunoprevenibles. Contribuyeron, así, a la implementación de la evidencia y la evaluación de intervenciones sanitarias en Colombia y América Latina.
