Despite free immunisation services through the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), around 14% of Indian households seek immunisation in the private sector. A new study published in BMC Medicine examined the potential impact of rotavirus vaccine introduction in the UIP on private-sector rotavirus vaccine utilization. The study estimated the value and volume of rotavirus vaccine sales in five Indian states (Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala), and found that access to rotavirus vaccination through UIP leads to a reduction in private-sector rotavirus vaccination utilization.
