GiveWell’s vaccine research strategy: Blog post

Home > GiveWell’s vaccine research strategy: Blog post

A new blog post from GiveWell outlines their current perspectives on vaccine grantmaking and highlights the main hypotheses guiding their future focus areas. Instead of a fixed strategy, GiveWell states that their work will be based around a continuously evolving set of hypotheses. These are outlined below:

Hypothesis 1: Focus on young children, with the most cost-effective interventions involving increasing the number of vaccines delivered to children under two, and numerous opportunities to integrate service delivery to this group.

Hypothesis 2: Focus on making vaccination easier, through better outreach, demand incentives, reduced vaccine shortages, utilizing SMS communication, and integration.

Hypothesis 3: Make exceptions to hypothesis 1 for diseases with very high numbers of deaths, e.g. HPV vaccination.

Hypothesis 4: Investigate funding outside of Gavi’s remit, spanning vaccine development to testing different approaches.
