The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is hiring a Research Fellow or Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Health and Development. The role will contribute to the Shaping Health Packages and Researching Priorities (SHARP) Research Consortium, a four-year National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health research consortium. SHARP aims to inform and improve the design and implementation of Health Benefit Packages (HBPs) as part of national strategies for Universal Health Care in Africa. The research is integrated within HBP design and implementation in Kenya and Rwanda and includes health economics, health systems modelling, participatory methods, and economic and political economy analyses.

The Research Fellow or Assistant Professor will:

  • Contributing to work on understanding the economic consequences of health benefit package design and the resulting policy changes
  • Supporting a capacity strengthening programme around HBP design in Rwanda and Kenya
  • Contributing to written outputs.

Qualifications required:

  • For Research Fellow: a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic.
  • For Assistant Professor: a doctoral degree in a relevant topic.
  • Relevant experience or expertise in health economics, including economic evaluation for priority setting in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills relevant to health economics and the financing of health systems.
  • Expertise in appropriate analytical software for health economics modelling.
  • For Research Fellow: contributions to written outputs, preferably peer-reviewed, as expected within the relevant subject area or discipline.
  • For Assistant Professor: contributions as lead and co-author to peer-reviewed outputs, including significant contributions to at least four outputs within the most recent five years that are at least internationally excellent.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team and meet research deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to provide capacity-strengthening support and mentoring beyond the formal academic environment.
  • Willingness and availability to travel for in-country research, capacity strengthening activities, and conferences as required by the research programme.
