The African Journal of Health Economics, Systems and Policy (AJHESP) is a newly launched bilingual, fully open-access, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to health economics, health systems, health financing, and health policy in Africa. Launched in May 2026 by an editorial board of 11 researchers from 10 countries across Africa and the diaspora, the journal is co-led by Prof. Justice Nonvignon of the University of Ghana and Dr. Alex Adjagba of the UNICEF Center of Excellence in Nairobi.

The journal accepts submissions in both English and French, allows authors to submit abstracts in African languages, and emphasizes context-relevant peer review grounded in African health system realities. In addition to traditional research articles, AJHESP will publish Policy Papers, Commentaries, and Perspectives, and will also host a companion podcast to extend dialogue between researchers and policymakers. AJHESP will also produce a companion podcast designed to facilitate continued dialogue between researchers and decision-makers.

Highlights

  • AJHESP is Africa’s first bilingual, fully open-access, peer-reviewed journal focused specifically on health economics, systems, and policy.
  • The journal publishes content in both English and French, with peer review conducted in the language of submission. Spanish and Portuguese will be added soon.
  • Authors have the option to submit abstracts in African languages.
  • The journal’s scope includes health economics, health financing, health systems, and health policy.

AJHESP was established in response to growing pressure on African governments to strengthen domestic health financing systems amid declining external health assistance, with the aim of providing a platform for context-relevant, policy-oriented evidence produced in and for African settings.
